RESOLVE TO BE READY 2009!

September is National Preparedness Month

This year, September 11th is a National Day of Service. Please let us know what your organization, your neighborhood or you as an individual are planning as a service contribution for September 11th.

If you would like to sign on as a Preparedness Month Partner, please contact Glenda at 262-2098 or by email glandua@borough.kenai.ak.us

Does everyone in your family know where to go and who to call if you're not together when disaster strikes? Do you have at least a week supply of food and water as well as car and home emergency kits so your family is ready to shelter in place or evacuate in the event of an earthquake or other large scale emergency?  Materials to help you prepare are available free from the KPB Office of Emergency Management  or can be ordered directly from the FEMA warehouse at 1-800-480-2520 or by visiting  the Ready website  at www.ready.gov.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

In almost all modern societies, the most basic of values is people helping people, and in the process, helping themselves.

As with most volunteer programs, the KPB Citizen Corps program operates with limited resources and volunteers are what KEEP US GOING.  If you're interested in fostering emergency preparedness in your neighborhood, workplace or community, here are some ways you can help:

Take CERT and Fire Corps training and volunteer to be part of a response team

Help get your neighborhood ready with the  Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) organizing tool

Hand out our emergency preparedness checklists in your church or club or at health and safety fairs

Help plan CERT volunteer gatherings and exercises

Write a newsletter article

If you're interested in  promoting emergency preparedness in your area, please call or email:

Thoughts on disaster preparedness  -

The landscape that drew many of us to Alaska also presents us with a long list of natural disaster possibilities, from earthquakes and tsunamis to volcanic ash, flooding, avalanches, severe winter weather and raging wildfires.  Fortunately, Alaskans as a group tend to be hardy, resourceful and self-reliant.  Having said that, there are still many things we can each do to minimize our risks - personally, materially, and as a community.

Are you ready for the possibility of a natural or man-made disaster? Test your disaster preparedness with some of the following questions:

Information that can help you be disaster ready is available through the Kenai Peninsula Borough Office of Emergency Management, FEMA, and the American Red Cross.  Don't delay -  start working on your family disaster plan today!

What is the Kenai Peninsula Citizen Corps?

The Kenai Peninsula Citizen Corps (KPCC) program currently consists of two volunteer-based programs that provide communities with training, resources to help identify disaster risks and develop solutions, and opportunities to connect local leaders, volunteers and first responders to help build stronger, safer, better prepared communities on the Kenai Peninsula. For more information on your local Citizen Corps programs, view the brochure.

Questions? Call (or email) the Kenai Peninsula Citizen Corps Coordinator at 262-4910.

To apply for a Citizen Corps program, fill out this application form. You will be contacted regarding the program and/or training you've indicated.
